Connecting with our Communities

Connecting with our Tribes in meaningful ways is the key to ensuring the work we do at UTBB is aligned with the needs of our people. Below you can find recent videos, slideshows, and handouts from meetings that UTBB has hosted in Bristol Bay and beyond!

ANCSA D-1 Protections Withdrawal Comments & Hearings

Across the state, 28 million acres of BLM-managed public lands could soon be repurposed for extractive industrial development. In Bristol Bay specifically, 1.2 million acres are being evaluated for removing ANCSA D-1 protections. These vast tracts of land are public and feed Alaska Native communities, nourish incredible fish and wildlife biodiversity, and serve as massive carbon sinks for the planet.

BLM had a 60-day public comment period from 12/15/2023 - 2/14/2024 on a potential rollback of public land protections. Thanks to our Tribes, communities, and supporters, the federal government heard from over 160 concerned individuals that we want public land uses that support local communities and prioritize clean water, healthy habitat, and food security!

Sustainable Energy Community Meetings

UTBB, UAF Bristol Bay Campus, and Nushagak Cooperative traveled to Koliganek, New Stuyahok, Ekwok, Aleknagik, and Dillingham (and also presented virtually on Zoom) to share information about sustainable energy initiatives. The goal for UTBB was to bring together organizations that had resources and plans for supporting and developing renewable resources to ensure communities had a chance to review information to make informed decisions on the future of their energy sources.
