OFFERING equipment, training, and experience for adult Bristol Bay residents to gain remote employment skills.

Community Outreach Assistants

2024 COAs Nia White (left) and Chanice Johnson (right) help with work in the UTBB office.

Our remote work cohorts complete both in-person and virtual training to gain skills ranging from project management and basic administration, to strategic community outreach and organizing.

Groups then put training into action by initiating projects in their home communities, such as local election education to improve civic engagement and voter turnout. They also each conceive of and execute a community-service project of their choice.

Trainings help participants gain skills in:

  • Google Workspace & Microsoft Office – digital productivity & collaboration

  • Asana, Canva, & Squarespace – project management, design, and digital presence

  • EveryAction, Constant Contact, & Zoom – community organizing & virtual outreach

Each COA receives a laptop, participates in live and recorded trainings, and builds skills with real-world applications from outreach to project planning.

Importance of Remote Work

Remote work is crucial for increasing access to jobs in Bristol Bay. Historically, employers have centralized opportunities in hub communities, which limits the talent pool, excludes region-wide communities and perspectives, and can increase administrative and travel costs. Bristol Bay has a wealth of potential remote workers who are excited to contribute from their own communities. Remote work training programs are key to building a highly skilled workforce and positions more Bristol Bay residents for full-time employment opportunities.

2024: A Test of Concept

In 2024, UTBB launched a Community Outreach Assistant (COA) remote work program in 25 communities, successfully hiring COAs in 11 communities. Each COA completed training to gain remote employment skills to be able to conduct effective community outreach and engagement. The program was a great success! Each COA exemplified a commitment to strengthening Bristol Bay through grassroots engagement, remote work innovation, and civic leadership.
