Update on the Nuyakuk Hydro Pre-Licensing Comment Period
Nushagak Cooperative has responded to the comments many of us submitted after reviewing the feasibility studies they conducted over the past two summers.
UTBB’s staff and technical experts were disappointed in Nushagak Cooperative’s dismissal of the concerns many shared about inadequate studies and projected potential impacts to fisheries. We will continue to engage with the process to ensure our fish and way of life are protected.

On May 20, the agency in charge of federal licenses (FERC) will announce whether the Co-op has collected enough information to move into the licensing phase for the project, or if additional studies are needed in the current pre-licensing phase. If FERC allows the Cooperative to move into “licensing,” then Nushagak Cooperative will decide if they’re going to move forward.
The current “pre-licensing phase” essentially is where information is gathered about the project. The “licensing phase” is where decisions about the project are made based on the information gathered in pre-licensing.
