In the Primary Election this August, and then the General Election in November, Alaskans will decide who will represent us at the state and federal levels: our governor, state representative and senator, and our U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator. The pick-one Primary Election is like the first cut: it narrows down the list of who will be on the ballot in the November, ranked-choice voting General Election.

Ways to Vote
By mail (request a ballot be mailed to you)**

If you plan to vote by mail: Request your ballot by August 8. Mail your ballot back well before election day. We recommend completing and mailing back your ballot the SAME DAY you receive it.

In many communities, there are designated EARLY VOTING LOCATIONS - these might differ from your standard polling place.
Why vote in the Primary?
If you do not vote in the Primary, you are letting other people decide who your choices are for the actual election. Have a say in who makes it to the final round!
Your vote may matter more in the Primary
Primary elections have lower turnout, which means your vote carries a lot of weight. If you care about what the government does, this is where you can have influence.
What is a “Pick-One Primary”?
All candidates will appear on the same ballot, regardless of party. Voters will choose ONE candidate for each race (e.g. Pick one candidate pair to be Governor/Lt. Governor, one candidate for the state Senate, one for the U.S. Senate, and so on). You are choosing who you want to advance to the Nov. 3 General Election. The top four vote-getters in each race will advance to the General Election.
Voting impacts the issues you care about
The people elected to office make choices that ripple through your life, from the cost of living and public services to the future of your community. In the Primary, you will vote for the candidate (one per race) who cares about the issues you care about. If you do not vote, someone else is picking for you.
