Technical experts, Bristol Bay leaders to provide analysis of Army Corps’ inadequate environmental review of Pebble Mine

Bristol Bay, AK – Technical experts and Bristol Bay leaders will provide their views of the recently released final Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Pebble Mine on Monday, July 27, 2020 through a virtual press conference.

The first stage of Pebble’s mine plan would destroy thousands of acres of wetlands and more than a hundred miles of streams – all critical parts of the pristine ecosystem that supports Bristol Bay’s salmon and communities. Despite this reality, the Army Corps’ widely criticized environmental review significantly underestimates the risks this mine poses to Bristol Bay, ignoring the concerns from Congress, and State, Federal, and tribal cooperating agencies.

Scientific and technical experts have been clear throughout Pebble’s environmental review about the significant inadequacies including: financial infeasibility of the applicant’s proposed project; inadequate seismic analysis and dismissal of tailings dam failure risk; project design deficiencies including with water and tailings management; underestimate of impacts to fish; and impacts to the subsistence, sport, and commercial fisheries.

Experts and local leaders will address these issues and others during an upcoming virtual press conference.
